At the End of a Rainbow

We are two weeks into the second writing session of the year and our writing spirits are high. I’m delighted to hear that some of the members have been motivated to continue writing on their own time. Also it seems most are happy enough with what they produce at the meetings that they are sharing their writing with others. Now I just need to convince them to let me share their stuff here too. Until then here is one of my stories from this week (but first, a quick reminder that all of the stories I share are stream of consciousness and have not been edited).

By Genevieve Clovis

It had been one of those days where everything was just not quite right. Nothing terrible had happened but everything had taken that little bit of extra effort, leaving Nathaniel drained. He packed his papers away in his brief case dreaming of being home. But it wasn’t that simple. His car had been stolen earlier in the week and he now faced the forty minute walk home. Usually he wouldn’t mind the walk but it had been one of those days and he was tired right down into his bones. And he’d forgotten his running shoes.

Nathaniel waved goodbye to Gloria the receptionist who barely spared him a glance as he headed out of the office.

The light drizzle which had persisted all day had thankfully stopped leaving him to walk along the wet pavement weaving around the pedestrian traffic. His brief case weighed down his left side as it swung beside him threatening to smack anyone who got too close.

Just ahead was the park. He was halfway home. His feet in fancy leather dress shoes protested the walk. His shoes protested the field of wet recently mown grass he was about to walk through. Nathaniel was too tired to care.

He stepped into the park as the sun broke through the gloomy clouds. the sounds of traffic and bustle of the evening melted away. Nathaniel looked around in wonder feeling better than he had all day. Walking towards him from the other side of the park was a tall woman in colourful clothing. She smiled looking up as the sun shone brighter.

She stopped. Just in front of her lay the end of a rainbow.

Nathaniel watched fascinated. He’d never been so close to the end of a rainbow. The woman reached out her hand putting it into the rainbows rays. Then the smile slipped from her face turning to a look of horror as she was yanked inside.
