Everything She Wore was White

Here’s what I came up with given twenty minutes and the prompt everything she wore was white.

It wasn’t supposed to be like this, Ami thought as she looked disconsolately out of the window of her parked car. Rain thundered against the roof drowning out the noise of the other cars arriving. A blue sedan pulled in beside her and honked. She could just make out Sarah’s ‘I told you so’ face distorted through water and windows.

Ami’s phone buzzed. Four, five, six messages from the other cars all probably saying the same things. Ami sighed, picked up her phone and put it back down without checking it.

“It’ll be okay,” Tim said from the passenger seat, “We’ll just go home and have an indoor picnic. It’ll be fun.” He laid a hand on her thigh and squeezed in reassurance.

“I fought so hard to get everyone to agree to coming out here,” she replied feeling close to tears. “I’m never going to live this down. Every time we see them it’s gonna be, ‘Hey kids remember that time Aunt Ami took us to the muddy field and told us it was gonna be fun?’ Ami rested her head against the steering wheel. Her phone continued to buzz. Messages, phone calls, horns honking, everyone wanting to know what they were going to do now.

Tim opened his door.

Ami sat back up, “what are you doing?”

“It’s warm rain. Come out with me for a minute.” he stepped out in the pouring rain and was almost instantly soaked.

“Are you crazy?” Ami yelled as he closed the door. She was not going out there; everything she wore was white.

Tim walked around the car and opened her door. “Come on,” he said playfully.

“No way.” Ami shook her head.

“There’s an umbrella in the back,” he told her.

Rolling her eyes she grabbed the umbrella and got out of the car. “What are we even doing?” she asked, irritated.

Tim smiled, and threw a handful of mud that had been hidden behind his back at her.

Ami stood frozen, shocked, and then burst out laughing as Tim ran into the muddy filed. She dropped the umbrella and gave chase, “You’re gonna pay for that.”
